Is there life elsewhere in the universe? This question has long remained unanswerable, but the discovery of small, temperate exoplanets whose atmospheres can be probed invites us to attempt to answer it scientifically. In particular, what would have to be discovered in their atmosphere for life to be detected? These are complex issues, and we'll be addressing them at this conference.
