We benefit from atomic clocks every day. Indeed, "Coordinated Universal Time" and exact time are derived from these standards. They are also indispensable for network synchronization (telecoms, power distribution, Internet), satellite positioning and navigation (GPS, GALILEO, etc.), and many other applications. These timepieces have accompanied scientific and technological progress in many fields: optics, astronomy, mechanics, electronics, atomic physics, quantum mechanics, etc. How do they work and what research is underway, particularly in our region? What role did the Observatoire Cantonal, the University and other companies and specialist research institutes in Neuchâtel play?
