Strange turtles
Jérémy Anquetin, JURASSICA Museum; Department of Geosciences, University of Fribourg.
Turtles form a special group among today's animals. These strange reptiles, with their bony shells, horny beaks and retractable necks, seem to come straight from the distant past. A relic of ancient times, untouched by evolution. Well, it's not! In fact, turtles have an evolved and versatile body shape that has enabled them to adapt to a wide range of environments, from dry deserts to oceanic vastness, rainforests, rivers and ponds. Inspired by paleontological discoveries in Switzerland and around the world, we'll retrace the evolutionary history of turtles and try to unravel some of their mysteries.
